Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has recounted a radio speech delivered by former Prime Minister John Curtin on March 14, 1942. Mr Albanese said Mr Curtin’s famous declaration, “Australia looked to America”, was deeper than a statement of war-time necessity. “It was an assertion of Australia’s right, and indeed, Australia’s responsibility to act in our own interest, to make our own alliance, to decide our place, in our region, for ourselves,” he said. “That principle of sovereignty has remained at the core of Labor’s approach.”
