Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers has characterised the Morrison government’s term as one “marred by policy mistakes and missteps”.
Dr Chalmers said while Australia “rose to the occasion each time it needed to”, the government instead “fell back into old habits”.
“A people who were there for each other at every single turn and a prime minister who went missing, taking credit but never taking responsibility,” Dr Chalmers said.
“And now, after nine long years, three Treasurers and three prime ministers, the verdict is in.
“Multiplying debt and deficits as far as the eye can see. Fact after fact after fact, speaking to this one disappointing truth.
“This has been a wasted decade of missed opportunities, of families falling further and further behind, weighed down by skyrocketing costs of living and falling real wages.”
