The Battle of Shiloh in 1862 was one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War. And even though Ulysses S. Grant’s troops fought with vigor, their victory came at a great cost. As the sun set on April 7, hundreds of soldiers laid down on the ground for hours in the dark, cold and rainy battlefield until paramedics arrived. But then something strange happened: some of the men’s wounds started to glow. Upon arrival at the hospital, the glowing men recovered rapidly and with a lower infection rate than the soldiers whose injuries did not light up. The legend of the phosphorescent men would then become part of the Civil War’s lore and folklore, and the mystery of the glowing wounds would remain unsolved until 2001 when a teenage Civil War enthusiast embarked on a science project with his best friend.
